Tunisian sailor Ia Qizgiz, participant in last year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo in the 49th class, tragically died during training. The yacht she was sailing on with her twin sister Sarah capsized and the 17-year-old contestant drowned.
The tragic accident affected Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee.
“I was shocked to hear the news of the passing of sailor Ee Ghezquez. She has been an inspiring talent and role model for her generation. Her participation in Tokyo 2020 with her twin sister Sarah, will continue to inspire girls around the world,” Bach wrote in a statement posted on the IOC website.
At the Tokyo Olympics, the two Geezys sisters took 21st place. Alexandra Melzaca and Kenja Obuda competed in this category, placing 16th. The gold medalists were won by Martin Grill and Kahina Konzi.
