A very important decision has been made regarding the future of Oscar Pistorius. The former athlete will be released from prison on parole almost 11 years after the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
A former disabled athlete who specialized in the 100, 200 and 400 meters races was convicted of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013. During the trial, Oscar Pistorius testified that he thought the woman was a thief.
In 2017, he was sentenced to 13 years and 5 months in prison. South Africa’s Constitutional Court has ruled that a murder convict had served half his sentence and was eligible for parole. The decision was made on Friday.
The parole board said Pistorius will leave prison on January 5, 2024. The mother of the murdered woman did not oppose this ruling. It is true that in a letter she sent to the committee she questioned whether Pistorius’s emotional problems had been resolved in prison.

As the BBC reported, the murdered woman’s mother added that she would be “concerned for the safety of any woman who might come into contact with him.” June Steenkamp did not attend Friday’s hearing.
This was Pistorius’ second parole hearing. The previous order ended in rejecting the application.
Under South African law, offenders automatically become eligible for parole after serving half their sentence.
Pistorius is a six-time Paralympic champion. He struggled to be able to compete in competitions with able-bodied competitors. In 2007, he became the first person in the world to do so. Compete for two special carbon fiber prosthetics.
Pistorius lost his legs as a result of birth defects in the first year of his life (11 months). Despite his advanced disability, he has always been active in sports. He is the record holder among disabled people at distances of 100, 200 and 400 metres.
