Shooting stars, or meteors, are light phenomena that accompany the passage of a piece of rock from space (meteoroid) through the Earth’s atmosphere. Most of these particles burn up in the atmosphere, only the larger ones are able to reach the surface of our planet and after falling we find them in the form of meteors, as confirmed by astronomical observations.
Meteors appear in the sky throughout the year. The most active meteor showers include the Perseids. Their activity began on July 17 and continues until August 24. But the most important period is near maximum, which usually falls on the night of August 12-13.
Shooting stars. “They fall in groups of 6-15 meteors.”
The Perseids are a meteor shower known since ancient times. These are fast meteors. They may have trails that last for a moment after their flight. They reach speeds of up to 59 km/s, and usually fall in groups of 6-15 meteors within 2-3 minutes. At most, there can be up to 100 meteors per hour (under theoretical and ideal conditions).
The meteors from the Perseid meteor shower are associated with Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. This is a periodic comet that passes close to Earth every 133 years. It was first discovered in 1862.
You don’t need binoculars or telescopes to see meteors. All you need is a clear sky, preferably with a large portion of the sky visible. The darker the area, the more meteors we’ll see, so if we can’t get outside the city, it’s helpful to find an area where streetlights won’t shine in our eyes.
Shooting stars. The city of Lodz invites you to watch together.
In Łódź, you will be able to watch the meteors together in the Botanical Garden. It is organized by EC1 Łódź Planetarium in cooperation with Zielona Łódź. While admiring the phenomenon in the sky, you will also be able to get acquainted with some cosmic curiosities.
– Join us at the Botanical Garden. From 9:30 p.m. we will not only observe the Perseids. Through the telescope you will be able to see, among other things: Saturn, as well as other interesting objects. It will be an opportunity to look at the sky together and get acquainted with various cosmic curiosities, which will be talked about by the presenters of the planetarium and the Polish Society of Astronomy Enthusiasts – announced by Marta Wojniak from EC1 Łódź.
The entrance to the park is from the street. Krzemieniecka and from the street. Retkińska will be open until 11:30 p.m. Astronomical observations will also be accompanied by encounters with nocturnal insects during entomology workshops.
Echo Richards embodies a personality that is a delightful contradiction: a humble musicaholic who never brags about her expansive knowledge of both classic and contemporary tunes. Infuriatingly modest, one would never know from a mere conversation how deeply entrenched she is in the world of music. This passion seamlessly translates into her problem-solving skills, with Echo often drawing inspiration from melodies and rhythms. A voracious reader, she dives deep into literature, using stories to influence her own hardcore writing. Her spirited advocacy for alcohol isn’t about mere indulgence, but about celebrating life’s poignant moments.
