The Polish is one of the 19 main referees appointed to officiate the Euro 2024 matches, and on the day the European Championship began, the Polish referee addressed the fans. “Keep your fingers crossed. Best regards,” he wrote on behalf of himself and the entire Polish refereeing staff.

Even before the start of the competition in Germany, the Pole was among the candidates to referee the opening match of the Euro 2024 tournament, but in the end another referee was chosen. Friday’s match between Germany and Scotland, which the tournament hosts won 5-1, was coached by Clement Turpin. After that, experts admitted that mistakes made in an important match may have ruined the Frenchman’s chances of qualifying for the grand final of the European Championship.
Simon Marciniak with some decisions. The first step has been taken
The tournament was held for the first time on only the ninth day of the Euro Championship. In an interview with Przegląd Sportowy Onet, Canal+ Sport’s refereeing expert is convinced that this is not a random decision. — I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Simon waited so long Because it will likely be used in the later stages of the tournament. And with today’s performance he showed that he deserves it more than most – says Adam Leczmanski.
Summing up Marciniak’s performance he praises him for his confidence and quick decisions. The match was under complete control. You can see a lot of power. Only three cards are shown. You can see that the form is there and I hope it will be maintained for as long as possible. It was fun to watch. I think there will be no talk about Polish referees after this match. There are no reservations – he confirmed this in an interview with Przegląd Sportowy Onet.
Two cases turned out to be particularly interesting. In the second half, the Belgians were happy to increase their lead after Romelu Lukaku’s goal. However, the goal was disallowed by VAR. Replays using special technology that supports video verification showed that the attacker was offside by several centimetres.
-This is a condition that cannot be detected with the naked eye. Only technology can capture it. I dare say the referee would be angrier if he raised his flag and it turned out there was no offside. The referee allowed the procedure to proceed as it should. That’s what VAR is for, to make corrections. As we saw in the replay, it was probably only part of the kneecap sticking out. I have no grudge against the assistant referee. Such situations are allowed. The expert says VAR corrected it and that’s the point.
A moment later, the Belgian defender played the ball with his hand. This situation has been heating up on social media for a while. It appeared that after a quick restart of the match from a free kick following a tactical error, Marciniak prevented VAR from intervening. However, Lechmansky dispels doubts.
There is no doubt about having a hand in the penalty area. “Simon knew better than to play ball.”
—It should be written in bold. Perhaps this is a kind of promotion of “badness”, but the regulation clearly states that: If I shoot myself or my partner, there is no hand. If a Belgian player plays the ball and hits his player, even if his hand is far from the body, what is meant is that the ball was played by his teammate. There can be no doubt of misconduct. That’s why it happened so quickly, we hear.
There is no doubt that the Pole correctly assessed the situation himself, without the help of the car. – Simon knew very well who was playing ball. I know that few people know about this rule, even players and coaches. Now maybe they’ll find out. This is an interesting case. I know Simon, he definitely said: “He played his part, it’s no use.” VAR may have only confirmed that. A very good decision, but perhaps one of the fans in the warm chair had some doubts – he explains and is optimistic about the rest of the tournament as our referees lead.
— I’m waiting for the next match of the Polish refereeing team. Let it be the knockout stage, the preliminary stage, and then… Move forward – he adds in an interview with Przegląd Sportowy Onet.
This is also confirmed by the fact that referee Turpin’s errors in the opening match ruled him out of refereeing the main matches. – Daniele Orsato, who has finished his career, and Englishman Anthony Taylor will also be candidates. Michael Oliver had previously played two matches, as did Artur Soares Dias, who officiated against the Poles, as well as Turek, who also worked the Polish national team match (Khalil Umut Miller, editor’s note) and Felix Zwier – Lyczmański recounts.
– I don’t want to croak, so we wait patiently. Today’s performance showed that he is “at the top” – sums up with optimism. Let us remind you that the Grand Final of Euro 2024 is scheduled to take place on July 14 at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
