This is how much the population of Poland will decrease in 2023. The Central Statistical Office released this data

The largest decrease in population occurred in the province. Silesia (by 26,572 people), the smallest in the province. Masovian Voivodeship (by 85 people) – according to data from the Central Statistical Office published in the report “Area and population in the regional cross-section in 2024”. The population increased in two provinces: in Lesser Poland Voivodeship (618) and in Pomeranian Voivodeship (1266).

In a total of 314 localities, compared to 2023, the population decreased in 270 of them, and the population increased in 43. In percentage terms, the largest decrease was recorded in the following counties: Hajnówka in the Voivodeship. Podlaskie (610 people), Braniew in the Voivodeship. Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship (570 people), Skarzysko Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship (by 984 people) and Hrubieszów in the Voivodeship. Lublin Voivodeship (by 811 people). In percentage terms, the largest population growth occurred in the counties of Wrocław in the Voivodeship. (Lower Silesia, Piaseczno in the Voivodeship). Masovian Voivodeship and Poznań Voivodeship of Greater Poland Voivodeship, as well as in the Warsaw-Western Poviat District in the Voivodeship of Masovian Voivodeship.

The Central Statistical Office also tracked how the population changed in cities. The largest decreases were recorded in Łódź (6,429 people), Bydgoszcz (3,604 people) and Poznań (2,877 people). The largest percentage of the population decreased in Konin (1,046 people) and Walbrzych (1,563 people). In total, the city’s population decreased by 97,504 people.

In rural areas, the population decreased by 32,315 people, the largest in the province. Lublin Voivodeship (9,558 people), Łódź Voivodeship (9,276 people), Masovian Voivodeship (7,371 people) and Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship (6,010 people). In the villages of the province, 6,553 people fell in Pomerania, and the villages of Lower Silesia had an additional 4,330 people.

The population density in Poland has not changed compared to the previous year and is 120 people per square kilometer. In the last three years, starting from 2021, the population density has decreased by one person per square kilometer per year. 2024 is the first year after 2021 in which there has been no decrease in population density.

As in the previous year, the highest population density is in the province of Silesia and amounted to 350 people per square kilometer. A high level of this indicator was also recorded in the following provinces: Malopolskie (226 people per square kilometer) and Masovian Voivodeship (155 people per square kilometer).

The least populated are the Podlaskie and Warmian-Masurian Voivodes (56 people per km²) and the Lubusz Voivodeship (70 people per km²).

Among the cities with county rights, the highest population density was in Warsaw (3,599 persons per square kilometre) and in two Silesian cities: Świętochłowice (3,416 persons per square kilometre) and Chorzów (3,019 persons per square kilometre).

Świnoujście in the province West Pomeranian Voivodeship, as in previous years, remains the unit with the lowest population density with 193 persons per square kilometre.

The Central Statistical Bureau also reported that as of January 1, 2024, there are 16 provinces, 314 counties, 66 cities with death rights, and 2,477 municipalities: 302 urban (including 66 municipalities that also have city status with death rights), 1,464 rural and 711 urban-rural.

Compared to the previous year, Poland’s area increased by 225 hectares (from 31,393,136 hectares to 31,393,361 hectares).

The announcement of the Central Statistical Office explained that “this value is the significant increase in the West Pomeranian Province and is linked, as in previous years, to the adjustment of the boundaries of the territorial units to the baseline of the territorial sea.” (Bab)
