Tough times in the Balearic Islands. “The streets are flooded, the cars are half submerged in water”

The Spanish Balearic Islands have been experiencing violent weather since Wednesday. Heavy rains have flooded the roads and dozens of flights have been cancelled. Several people have been injured. Kontakt 24 received a report from a Polish woman who was stuck at Mallorca airport.

Spain’s national weather agency AEMET maintained an orange alert for the entire Balearic Islands on Thursday due to the high risk of storms, having previously downgraded it from red. But emergency services said the worst was over. On Wednesday, the situation was so severe that people were being urged to stay indoors.

On the Palma de Mallorca-Manacor route, 29 people were evacuated from the train due to rising water levels. Several people were evacuated in the town of Soller.

Regional emergency services said they had received about 180 reports of storms in the past 24 hours. Nine people were injured on the island of Formentera on Wednesday.

More than 50 flights have been cancelled at Balearic Islands airports since Wednesday, and delays are likely to continue, warns Spanish airport operator Aena.

“The streets are flooded, and the cars are half submerged in water.”
