It was supposed to be a hit, but it turned out to be a foolish move. Sonny Kittel came to Raków Częstochowa a year ago as a big star. The club’s owner, Michał Świerczewski, personally convinced him to make the transfer, but unfortunately it ended in complete disappointment.
Kittel played very poorly and, apart from a wonderful goal against Qarabag, made very little appearance in the Champions League qualifiers. So much so that he was loaned out in the winter to the Australian club Western Sydney Wanderers. After half a year, he returned to Częstochowa, while Marek Babchon almost immediately stated that the player was not in his plans for the 2024/25 season and that it would be better for him to start looking for a new employer.
And so it happened. Kittel was presented on Saturday as a new player for Grasshopper Club Zurich, the 27-time Swiss champions. He signed a contract until June 30, 2025, with an option to extend it by twelve months.
His new team has not started the new season well. After four rounds, JC Zurich is in last place in the standings with only one point.
Kittel played 22 games for Rakow. He scored four goals and had one assist. Not a lot, especially considering his huge earnings.
