Commenting on the Ukrainian military operation in the Kursk region, General Michaław Benek said that “it is unthinkable in the history of wars that a country that was attacked by overwhelming forces, and which continuously defended itself for almost two and a half years, could carry out such a spectacular attack.” He also discussed Kyiv’s military and political goals.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Army, General Oleksandr Syrsky, said on Tuesday that the area of the Kursk Oblast region of Russia, occupied by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has increased to 1,263 square kilometers, and the number of towns under the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has increased to 93. SZU operations in the Kursk region have been ongoing since August 6.
“It’s unbelievable in the history of warfare.”
The Ukrainian-led offensive is a deep raid that observes all the rules of the art of war – maneuver, artillery, drone support – despite the absence of aviation – the operation, reconnaissance groups, comprehensive reconnaissance, bringing in reserves, second shots, and destroying mobile columns that make up the enemy’s reserve, the former NATO Deputy Strategic Commander for Transformation, Gen. Mieczyslaw Benek, said on Wednesday.
The general said: – It is incredible in the history of wars that a country that was attacked by overwhelming forces and defended itself continuously for almost two and a half years, was able to carry out such a stunning attack.
Kyiv’s military and political goals
The adviser to the Minister of National Defense stressed that Ukraine’s military goal, which was certainly achieved as part of the offensive, was to disrupt the Russians in their preparations for a larger offensive on Pokrovsk and Kharkiv.
Moreover, in the occupied area, the Armed Forces created a buffer zone that did not allow the area to be used for shelling the Sumy region and other Ukrainian territories, and also dismantled the preparations of groups of captured conscripts.
According to General Pinnick, Ukraine’s political goals were to draw the attention of world public opinion to the fact that this country is constantly defending itself, and at the same time to demonstrate the possibility of transferring operations to enemy territory. In addition, it was to show the Russians what it looks like when they wage war on their territory.
What’s the next step?
– Ukraine has engaged two well-trained battalions with battalion combat groups, artillery and anti-aircraft support. He added that at this stage they are somehow preparing to defend these occupied fortifications on the hills surrounding the city of Soja.
According to General Bennik, the Ukrainians “cannot afford” to lose the forces used in the offensive and “are probably preparing some way to withdraw them in an orderly manner in the future.” In his opinion, they will not advance towards Kursk, because they have probably exhausted their capabilities for conducting offensive operations and have significantly expanded their logistical lines.
