Ukraine shuts off Orban’s oil tap. Serious blow

Ukraine has imposed tougher sanctions on Russian oil company Lukoil, meaning it will suspend oil deliveries via the southern branch of the Druzhba pipeline to Hungarian refineries.

On July 16, the Ukrainian government introduced a package of tough sanctions targeting Russian oil companies that have so far used the Ukrainian transportation system.

Lukoil, Russia’s second-largest oil producer, which supplied raw materials to Hungarian refineries, was hit by sanctions.

Ukraine has turned off Orban’s oil tap. Hungary has a serious problem.

In June of this year, Ukraine announced that it intends to tighten sanctions from mid-July 2024 and cancel the possibility of using this country’s infrastructure to transport crude oil to Europe.

The information about the suspension of Russian oil supplies was announced by his Hungarian counterpart, Peter Szijjarto, after a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Hungary wants to move away from Russian oil

– We are currently working on a legal solution that would allow supplies to resume, because Russian crude oil is important from the perspective of our energy security.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the United Nations meeting in New York.

Sovcomflot, Russia's main crude oil carrier, could find itself in trouble.

Despite EU sanctions, crude oil from Russia, Hungary and Slovakia has been granted an exemption, and they will not have to abandon supplies via the Druzhba pipeline until 2025.

Currently, Russian oil provides 80 percent of Hungarian demand for this raw material.
