As NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in an interview with the German daily “Handelsblatt”, the West can supply Ukraine with more heavy weapons.
– We are at the decisive stage of the war – said Stoltenberg – and noted that now it is extremely important to provide Ukraine with weapons that will help achieve victory over Russia.
“The recent announcements on heavy military equipment are important – and I expect there will be many more in the near future,” said the NATO Secretary General.
Western position on the war
On January 15, 2023, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed the opinion that the normalization of relations between Western countries and Russia is impossible even after the end of the war that that country waged with Ukraine.
“It will never be the same as before.” Even if the guns fall silent in Ukraine, Stoltenberg said, one should not expect the normalization of our relations with Russia. The Secretary General of the Alliance also said that Russian President Vladimir Putin made a mistake by attacking Ukraine.
At the same time, Western leaders consider it necessary to maintain contacts with Moscow. In particular, French President Emmanuel Macron supports dialogue with the Russians and is convinced that the isolation of the Russian Federation is “the worst thing.”
The US State Department also considers it possible and important to maintain contacts with Russia.
What after the war?
NATO believes that the Russian Federation It does not intend to abandon its main objective – Take control of Ukraine – and prepare for a long war with a possible attempt to launch a new offensive. Such a prediction of developments was made in a recent interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) by the Secretary General of NATO. Jens Stoltenberg stressed that in this case, Western partners should plan long-term assistance to Ukraine.
According to him, the successes of the Ukrainian army should not create a misleading impression of a quick victory for Kiev. – Russia has mobilized and replenished the ranks of its army, and many of these are now undergoing training. Stoltenberg pointed out that all this indicates that Moscow is preparing to continue the war and may try to attack again.
