Smith has resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
Variety announced Friday night that Will Smith has decided to resign from his membership in the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. “He took this step at a time when he was embroiled in the most serious crisis of his career,” Variety wrote.
In a statement, Ferrari Reports reported, Smith called his behavior “horrific, distressing, and inexcusable” and said he was “resigning his membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences” and would accept any additional consequences that the Academy Board deems appropriate.
“The list of people I’ve hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, and many of my dear friends and loved ones, all of whom are present and the audience of the world,” Smith said. “I betrayed the Academy’s trust. I denied the nominees and other winners the opportunity to celebrate and honor their exceptional work. I am devastated.”
