When Disney+ announced sequels to Frozen and Toy Story (although their endings didn’t seem to indicate a desire to continue the theme), it seemed like nothing could surprise moviegoers anymore. The surprise was made by Warner Bros. Discovery that launched a nuclear bomb in a meeting with shareholders. There will be a new Lord of the Rings.
This is possible after signing a contract with Embracer in the summer of 2022. Thanks to this, the company acquired the rights to the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” brands, not only films, but also toys, games and amusement parks. Furthermore, rights to some works published after the death of his son, Christopher JRR Tolkien, such as “Unfinished Tales” or “The Children of Húrin” were added.
In an official statement from Warner Bros. Discovery books:
New Line took an act of faith 20 years ago to bring the incredible story, characters and world of The Lord of the Rings to the big screen. The result was a series of groundbreaking films that many generations of fans welcomed with open arms. […] However, the vast world created by JRR Tolkien remains unexplored by cinema. It’s an honor to be able to invite fans back to Middle-earth.”
It came as Warner had to admit a loss of $2.1 billion in the fourth quarter. Apparently, the studio wants to create a Star Wars-like franchise from Middle-earth.
Peter Jackson driving again?
As mentioned Hollywood ReporterIn addition to Tolkien’s well-known trademark, Warner wants to hire an impressive trinity of 17 Oscar winners for this project, so Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Bowen. The Triads turn out to be the goose that lays the golden eggs. The three Lord of the Rings films alone have grossed $3 billion.
It won’t be easy – he used similar treatments with Amazon Prime. They had for example Consult Bezos’ script, which they ultimately did not receive from Amazon, which is why they may have isolated themselves so tightly from producing the series.
Jackson and his associates issued a statement.diversethat Warner Bros. and Embracer “kept us informed every step of the way regarding Middle-earth. We look forward to hearing the details of their vision.”
What could the new Middle-earth movies be about?
Instead, you can breathe a sigh of relief, because there’s no Peter Jackson remake of “The Lord of the Rings” or “The Hobbit” around the corner. After all, as the studio itself points out: “The world of Middle-earth is huge.” To parts of history from the first and second era z The rights to The Silmarillion have not yet been sold, and previous deals do not cover them.
It is also worth immediately deleting the second era, the rights to which Amazon has already bought for an astronomical amount. And he did from it what he did and what we described, among other things, in the article “Dragons Release Episodes, i.e. the scene after HBO’s battle with Amazon Prime.” Therefore, neither the story of the creation of the rings, nor the story of the fall of Númenor, nor the fall of Sauron the First will be shown in cinemas.
So the content remains. Among the most exciting and promising things there might be, among others: the fall of Khazar-dum (the underground dwarven city where the Fellowship of the Ring encounters not only hordes of orcs but also the Berj awakened in the Third Age – Warner’s brother, “oh no” for the Amazons), the White Council and the Necromancer (the plot was only touched upon in “The Hobbit”. This version of Sauron also caused trouble in Middle-earth, restoring several rings, fighting Gondor, and tracking down the heirs of Isildur), and the adventures of Gimli and Legolas After the destruction of the Ring, which can be linked to the emergence of Middle-earth after another conflict and the rule of Aragorn.
