Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, the latest installment of the legendary flight simulation series, will offer a great solution in data management. Asobo Studio, the creators of the game, announced that thanks to the use of cloud technology, the game installation will take up only 50 GB, which is a significant reduction compared to previous versions.
However, Jorge Neumann, head of development, explained that the flight database used in the game reached an impressive size of 2.5 petabytes (2,500,000 GB). To avoid having to install such a huge amount of data on users’ devices, the studio decided to stream the content from the cloud.
Not only will this innovative approach significantly reduce the disk space required, it will also enable developers to continuously expand game content without burdening players’ devices.
Thanks to the cloud, it’s possible to add a lot of detailed elements, such as new airports, without affecting the size of the installation, Newman said.
It is worth noting that the trend towards increasing game sizes has become a problem for many gamers in recent years. For example, the previous version of Microsoft Flight Simulator from 2020 (after updates) reached almost 500 GB.
The new version of the simulator will also introduce the ability to explore the world on foot, further highlighting the impressive scope of changes while reducing the installation size.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will be released for the first time on November 19 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and Game Pass.
